Comments This originally came out back in 1996 on the then mighty Platipus label. This gets a re-release on Platipus 2 aka Porcupine and another worthy release it is. This was the first release by the artists and bundled with ‘Floating' it was a great buy. It still stands the test of time pretty well; the second half of the tune in particular is as powerful now as it was then. The synths are just crazy and really just send your brain into overdrive. The whole piece is really well put together well and at 146BPM is pacey to say the least. The beginning is a tad slow and that is quite frustrating, but as I've already said the second is fantastic. Still a good tune and worth listening to, even if it's just to reminisce like me.

3/5 : Good
Artist Aerian
Comments This has a nice haunting feeling right from the very beginning, can't quite describe what I mean; but I think you will get it. Good beat to get things going and a nice synth that carries the tune to the usual mid-way break. This is complimented with a nice piano break and then the tune really gets down to business. Nice and pacey feel, with some deep melodic synths in the background, which in turn have a very ‘common' sounding noise at the forefront. The tune does feint to deceive in that it pauses after for a second time which you may think is the end, fortunately it kicks back off again. This pause does disrupt the flow; but it's good that it isn't the end. As a tune, fairly run of the mill with some nice touches here and there.

2/5 : Not Bad
Artist Alex Kunnari
Comments You might have to listen to this a few times to really make up your mind, well I did. It's got a really nice rip to this, a very catchy (yet simple) synth that makes the tune to be honest. The underlying bassline is OK, nothing special; but it does the job. The main melody, of which there is only 1; is just this synth and the beat. It's very much a break tune I suppose and nice to mix with at that. It will need to grow on you as it's not a banging club tune or one that will make you cry with delight. It is something different, something that has a nice catchiness about it.

Comments Another re-release on Porcupine, this originally coming out in 1999. The artist can do no wrong in my eyes (or ears); pure genius at the time. This tune doesn't quite stand the test of time, but still delivers an amazingly brilliant sound. It's a re-hash of ‘The Scream'; with vocals and some extra ummph; works well. At the time this was a brilliant tune, way ahead of its time and one that I remember many a long night dancing to. Now, I think this is for the purists out there so I urge you all to have a listen. This is where dance and trance music came from, this is its real roots; pay homage.

Title Never Give In Original Mix

Comments Two very different mixes, with this being more up-tempo compared to the more melodic Aknael Mix; which I also like. This starts quickly, with a good 137 BPM beat and bass line. Even at the obligatory slowdown, things are kept fresh and that emphasis of pace is maintained. You get the main synth quite early and at first I was put off as it sounded out of place compared to the rest of tune. This does get toned down, with variances of the synth and when the melody launches you do get a really nice euphoric feeling through all the sounds coming together. You get an extra noise, very simple; but very effective in that it just helps move the tune along and lifts it at the same time. You also get a good dose of what the artist wants you to hear, very nice. Both tunes are worth adding to your collection, a good offering.

Artist Monada
Comments This is such a quirky tune, really offbeat in places. It has a great underlying drum line, quite pacey and really catchy. Good feel to this, nice and happy; but with that crucial club edge. This is basically a high octane progressive tune. The tempo has a fast feel to it and the synths are basic at best; just delivering a pulsating sound that is just so vibrant and infectious. It's a simple tune, but one that really works and catches the imagination. Something different for the weekend indeed.

Comments I originally got the ‘Spring Sampler EP' for the Monada tune, but there is also this little gem. Great beginning which slows down into a sublime piano break, very much on the 90's Café del Mar Ibiza side of tunes. Don't panic if that's not your thing, it soon throws down a beat and gets going. A fantastic euphoric melody, great sound, great feeling and a great vibe. So, it's a great tune you have guessed. The melody changes pace midway and adds a little extra sound to lift it up and it does just that. It's nice and long as well, with the piano drifting in and out really nicely. This is a great tune, add Monada and this EP is a must buy.

Artist Daniel Ocean
Comments This starts quite slowly, but oddly enough it works OK. The bass line is evident, lots of purpose and you will get a good feeling as to what is coming down the line. It does take a while to get going with the pre melody build up somewhat frustrating. Once you get there, what you will hear is pleasant on the ears. The main synth has a good vibe to it and the melody is built upon in two parts, with the latter having a slightly more upbeat tempo. The melody is also nice and long, which is this tunes real saving grace. Towards the end there is a very subtle noise that works really well and just adds a little something different. A good tune, worth a listen.

Artist ReOrder & Dave Deen
Comments These guys do make a good team with this being another solid tune from the duo. This isn't a tune that will knock your socks off and you will have to listen to it a few times to really hear it. Slow to get going and the melody is quite subdued, but it's what you ha=ear underneath it all. Quite a moving track, with some really deep synths and beats. It could do with a tad more life in it, but I think that's the point. The title is quite right; it's listening to the pulse of what is going on. I like this, it won't be everyone's taste, but the depth and feeling works really well.

Comments Wow, what a track. This is one of those rare tunes that really does grab me by the balls and squeeze hard. Lots of real passion has been poured into this, slow to start; but worth the wait. The melody is just pure euphoria, trance at its very very best. It has s such a great feel to this, I could die and go to heaven with this in the background. My only criticism is isn't long enough, I want more; but that's because it's a quality production. This is the sort of sound and vibe I like, bring it on.

Comments You have to listen through this and then again to really hear it. Lots of moving melodies and deep sounds, so you need a few goes to hear it all. The melody has a great feel to it, the synth has a fresh and crisp sound to it; delivering a piercing sound. The second half of the tune adds an extra piano break, which blends beautifully together to really enhance the whole sound. Lots of thought has gone into this, real passion and pride from the artist. I don't like the way it ends, quite abrupt; especially killing the melody short. That said, a good sound that you will like.

Comments I almost cum in my pants when I saw this had been re-released as this was, in my opinion; one of the finest tracks to come out of the 90s. Equally, the label it was on; Platipus, was probably one of the finest labels in the 90s releasing some astonishingly great tunes. The label closed in 2010 and Porcupine was born. This track is reviewed elsewhere on the site and scored a 5 and it still does. Over 10 years on and this still delivers a devastatingly good sound, with both mixes offering a very different sound. ‘Man With No Name', of Perfecto Fluoro fame; steals the show with a stormer. Hard pounding beats, lots of synth work and sampling vocals form the film Dune; fantastic. This is a classic in every sense, from a pioneering artist and legendary label. Buy this now.

Comments One of my fave artists, stretching back many years. This is quite a different offering to the norm and therefore quite refreshing. I like it when an artist decides to try something different, as long as they go back to what they know they are good at! This is quite a weird sound, the vocals in particular; but I think that's what I liked. Remember ‘The Orb', a different sound; but weird with it. This is a long track and there is a lot going on, with new sounds being added throughout. The melody is a combination of it all, but with some extra beats to really bring it out. This is just different, an experiment of sound. In some places it works brilliantly and others you question the artist's sanity. This is not going to appeal to everyone, but listen to it and make your own mind up.

Comments This has a really moody feel to it, very sinister background feel; which makes this sound all the better. Nice start, you get a feel early on as to what is coming and it delivers and lives up to expectations. The main melody has lots of different noise elements which are brought together to form a really nice vibe. Things slow down a bit with a nice piano beat, but the whole feel of the tune is untouched. This is a really nice mellow club tune. Lots of pace and vibe, but a certain subtleness that makes it such good listening on the ears.

Comments This is a happy tune, one that makes all the right noises and makes some of them nice and early on. It does then slow down and go through a long build-up, which seems to be the norm for so many tunes now. How about a quick build-up now and then? Nice sound (once you get there), has a nice feeling and the sound just bounces along quite happily. Unfortunately, you only get a minute (or so) of the main melody which is far too short so fortunately the artist kindly threw in 2 helpings. This is a good solid trance tune, lots of sounds and well produced. Nothing I haven't heard before, but nonetheless still a good vibe.
