Original Mix 4/5
|
|---|---|---|
| Artist | Synthex | |
| Comments | 'The system of philosophy that further develops the implications in the Upanishads that all reality is a single principle'; that's what the title means. Synthex (aka Rod and Rik) have been sending me their tunes for a while and these guys really kick ass. I know it all starts in the bedroom, but these two have been punding away making some corking tunes. 'Fallen Angel' is a right screamer and this follows on nicely from that. The hard thumping beat delivers a really good club feel and the main tune is right in your face. Very anthem and very euphoric, this is the sort of tune that them hands will be flying around to. I particularly like the little rapid beat during one of the mian bits and the spin back at the end. This almost makes the 'stunner' grade; but I would prefer a less 'in your face' chorus. Don't get me wrong it's really good and will rock any decent club, but it's a little bit too screechy. That aside, these guys deserve a vinyl release. There's some real 'crap' out there which has made it and this deserves a chance. Do check out their site for more of their stuff, 'Atlantis; is way different to this one ! Keep at it guys, your time will come. | |

Original Mix 4/5

| Artist | Yamakasi | |
| Comments | I actually heard this and was thrilled when I got my hands on a copy. Has a bit of an Oriental feel to this. The melody is very simple, but with the hard beat it sounds really cool. Moves nicely along with a an anthem type feel to the whole thing. The best nit is that just when you think you've heard it, the beat changes ever so alightly and keeps going with a better sound. This I really like as it chops up the tune and makes it more interesting. Even the pauses in this work as they keep the sound going, all be it at a 'slower? rate. This is a really good tune, worth buying. | |

Michael Parsberg Remix 2/5 : Not Bad |
|---|---|---|
| Artist | Miro | |
| Comments | Heard a lot about this tune and I just don't see it. I like the idea of the talking over the minimal beat, very similar to an old Madonna record. It the tries to be clever by funking it up without a beat and it sounds a bit naff. Once it's moving this is an OK tune, but nothing more. I like the beat and the noises that go on behind it, but it just doesn't do anything really. I've never been a real fan of Miro and this hasn't changed my mind . | |

Original Mix 3/5 : Good
|
|---|---|---|
| Artist | Salt Lake | |
| Comments | I like this. Very chilled out, but runs at an amazing 138 BPM; trust me it sounds much slower. Has a really nice Ibiza feel to this with some lovely smooth piano work. There's a nice haunting melody in the background, which as odd as it sounds is always in the foreground; you just hear it. If you like stuff by Chicane and you fancy something ?funky chilled?, then definitely have a look at this one. | |

F&W Remix 2/5 : Not Bad |
|---|---|---|
| Artist | Commander Tom | |
| Comments | Hhhmmm, this suffers from an awful beginning; but finishes quite strong. Very hard beginning with a rattling hum and sampled vocals. To be honest, it sounds like something that came out 10 years ago when hard house started. Very disjointed and I only kept listening because of the artist. Once this gets past the crap, it turns into a half decent tune that sounds OK. Expect to hear this in the harder clubs for all you hard heads, not my cup of tea really. | |

Original Mix 2/5 : Not Bad |
|---|---|---|
| Artist | Dave Gardner | |
| Comments | There is something about this that grabbed my attention. I think it's very simple approach to music and the orchestral bits. Very similar to something that Paradise Soul would do. 132 BPM of strange music to be honest. The underlying sound which is best described as the noise and shook piece of metal would make, is really cool and adds a different dimension to the tune. If you fancy something different, listen to this. | |

Blue Sky Remix 2/5 : Not Bad
|
|---|---|---|
| Artist | Silverblue | |
| Comments | I never thought the day would come when a Platipus tune didn't rock my world hard. Well, this just doesn't grab me really hard as I've come to expect (and love). 4 very average tunes and very short at that. For 4 tunes I would have expected at least one really good mix, but none of these really stand out, The one I've chosen is the only one with any real pace and feeling to it, but at under 6 minutes long it just isn't long enough. A real shame. | |

| Title | Welcome to Africa |
Technopunk Remix 2/5 : Not Bad |
|---|---|---|
| Artist | Paffendorf | |
| Comments | This tries really hard to be a good tune and almost succeeds. This has got a really ear catching main tune, which is it's big plus point. The real downside is that it keeps stopping and starting and to make things worse there are vocals. They are very simple and it sounds so much like someone has tried to make them rhyme and it doesn't work. A good effort, but needs a good remix to sort out the vocals. It's also got nowt to do with Africa, not a tribal drum in sight. | |

Tribal Sun Remix 3/5 : Good |
|---|---|---|
| Artist | Kenny Hayes | |
| Comments | For those of you who are regular readers of the site will know I am a great fan of Kenny Hayes. I like his sound and the way he compiles his tunes, they sound fresh and purposeful. This tune is a good tune, but it's not up there with some of them. I think this is very much like ?Ibiza Sky? and wouldn't be surprised to see this double A sided with the later. It's a happy tune with some nice sounds in it, especially the flute. Good beat as always make this a definite club hit. | |

Lys & Gigi S Remix 3/5 : Good |
|---|---|---|
| Artist | Matt Darey | |
| Comments | Everyone seems to be re-releasing old tunes, with Mr Darey following suit. The original of this was a really good tune and I'm not convinced this has helped the cause. I like the 'scratching? elements, which sound really cool and different. The tune itself is good, but does drag a bit. I think the vocals at times sound like they are slowing the tune down, which the original didn't. It's a good effort and a good tune, but it's not the original. | |

Mike Koglin Remix 3/5 : Good |
|---|---|---|
| Artist | Wout | |
| Comments | Mike Koglin is a bit hit and miss, although his stuff is generally pretty good; hence why this interested me. This is a good tune, very trance like and high on the euphoric tip. Good solid beat, with a pounding bass line to match. The main chorus has a real catchy tune to it, that sounds very techno like. I was also very pleased that there was two helpings to this as it seemed it was going to run out of time. A simple, but effective tune that sounds good; all be it a bit samey. | |

| Title | Happy To Be Sad |
Original Mix 3/5 : Good |
|---|---|---|
| Artist | Derek Howell | |
| Comments | This is a really nice and relaxed tune, way good for that early morning drive to work. This is just so simple. A very easy 128 BPM, with a nice little drum machine percussion and some nothing fancy synth work. This is very refreshing and a nice downstep from the usual harder stuff. Don't expect to hear this in your normal clubs, this will be for the more refined moments. I like my chillout and this is a very worthy addition to your collection. | |
| Label | Bedrock : Released December 2004 |
| Title | Mechanical Dreams |
Original Mix 3/5 : Good |
|---|---|---|
| Artist | St John | |
| Comments | This has that nice trance feel to it, you know that old reliable one that you hear and know that it's going to be OK. It's is OK, although like so many other tunes it takes a bloody age to get going and when it does; it disappoints a bit. You expect something really special after the wait and when it doesn't happen you feel betrayed. This is a good tune, solid beat and a nice fresh and funky feel to it. There are some nice noises going on and I like the drum roll in places. The chorus just isn't long enough, but this is OK and worth a listen. | |
| Label | Shushh : Released December 2004 |
| Title | Santiago |
Original Mix 4/5
|
|---|---|---|
| Artist | Starr | |
| Comments | A very simple tune. Repetitive anthem throughout, which sounds really good. There's also some nice and simple synth work over the top in places which again just adds to the sounds. Got a rather tribal feel to it in places, just the drums sound a bit kettle like. There are also two bites at the cherry, which are sandwiched by a not too slow bit. This sounds good and is quite different to a lot of the harder club stuff in that it's simple, but delivers. | |

Miika Kuisma Remix 3/5 : Good
|
|---|---|---|
| Artist | John 00 Fleming vs. MIKE | |
| Comments | This is a really strange number that reminds me of another tune that I can't place. This moves along really well and sounds nice and different along with some really cool subtle synth work. I was surprised as the artists are not generally my favourites, but the remixer was. The real downside to this like so many others is the length of the tune. No sooner are you into the sound and it's ending, which for this one is a real shame. Good nonetheless though. | |
